Notes on Payne, 2003
Cognitive science
- Bounded rationality - bounds provided by environment
- Limits if "human information processing system"
- structure vs. contents of mind
- Mental modes
- Emphasis on contents, not structure of mind
- We could draw lines at Structure/State/Function
- Use analogies with familiar domains to build models of unfamiliar ones
- Fragmentory
- about parts, processes, behaviors of the system, not unified models
Is asking questions of users the best way to understand their mental models? Perhaps this is only revealing the query model? Does it matter?
- Mental simulation
- Can perhaps help performance if it explains contingencies
- Mental models share structure with whatever they are modeling
