Over the last month or so I’ve had a couple conversations with people about social change and where the burden of responsibility lies. Should the government be implementing and funding social programs? Should small local organizations be doing it? Should nationwide organizations like the Red Cross serve as funnels for money and resources?
I didn’t really answer any of these questions in my conversations, but I stumbled across an idea for an organization that I’ve gotten more and more attached to. The idea is a web site where charities post itemized grants that they need for specific things. Rich people can then search locally for charities that they personally care about and make a direct contribution to a specific cause. Think Amazon.com wish lists for charities.
I’ll try to write more specific plans later, but I just struck on a name for the cause and I wanted to get some feedback.
The name is Funds For Change, and I just registered fundsforchange.org and created a possible logo and beginning of a visual identity. What do you all think about the idea/the name/the logo…. none of it is set in stone, so seriously tear it apart.

Cool.
i like the idea.
the name strikes me as the kind of thing that a computer program might spit out: “you said that your organization will provide ‘funds, money, connections, resources’ and that your goals are ‘change, philanthropy, efficiency, opportunity, social action’. please wait while i construct a list of names for your new organization!
…
…”
so, not that there’s anything Wrong with that (i like helpful computers!), but i would personally be tempted to think of something that sounds a bit more unique. the problem with names like this is that people remember what they’re LIKE but not necessarily what they are: “you know, it’s that ‘money for progress’ outfit! haven’t you heard of them?”
it seems like it could be good to focus more on the connection that you’ll provide between the charities and the rich people, and less on the money itself. because the money isn’t your product. the portal is your product.
does that make sense?
finally, the butterfly is classy, and i am impressed as usual. but why a butterfly? metamorphosis? new beginnings?
ok, fair enough.
but i would probably play around with a few other ideas as you think about the real message that you’re trying to sell.
good work, though, getting the idea out there. and it’s fun to think about. i will assume that it will come up again, and i’ll be more than happy to lend my brain to some more storming, if you like.
